Abstract
This seminar is dedicated to the preparation of the final qualifying work by the students of the program. The issues of choosing a topic, the basis for writing a paper, the formulation of the problem, goals, objectives, subject and object of research will be discussed.
Learning Objectives
- The goal of the course to assist students in preparing the thesis according to the high standards of the academic research or industry standard with regard to the selected style of the thesis format.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Students should be able to pose a research question that is based on the gap(s) identified in the literature and supported by the need from management/industry.
- Students should be able to show, in a systematic way, what is already known about the research topic as a whole, and to outline the key ideas and theories that help to understand this.
- Students should be able to develop a research methodology, regardless methods used, that is relevant to the research question and helps to answer it, and be able to implement this research methodology.
- Students should be able to present and describe the results of the carried-out study in a systematic and detailed way.
- Students should be able to discuss findings by providing background information regarding literature and the research question, comparing the results with previous findings, offering an explanation for the findings, noting implications of the finding, and giving suggestions for future work.
- Students should be able to summarize and bring together the main areas covered in the research implemented, and provide final comments or judgements on the whole research/research process.
Course Contents
- Introduction of the paper.
- Theory and literature review.
- Research methodology / Analytical section
- Results / Project section
- Research findings and Conclusion.
Assessment Elements
- Class AssignmentsWrite a review for a published academic paper from the field of your interest and present your recommendations for its improvement grounded in the principles discussed in the course. Particular attention should be paid to the document structure and its correspondence with the "instructions for authors" guide from the journal the article was published in as well as to the function of each section of the paper and to the logical connections between them.
- Research proposal defenceThe file(s) must be submitted 2 hours before the start of the seminar. Late submissions of the tasks result in 1 point deduction for every 24 hours of the delay. For online format: students should be visible at least when active (cameras on), otherwise the individual score for active participation and\or task presentation is reduced by 50%. Both analytical and visual content of the submissions as well as the presentations must be unborrowed or provide appropriate references, otherwise the score is reduced.
- Research peer-review evaluationThe first part of this assignment requires the students to submit their research proposals. The second part of the assignment assumes that students review 3 proposals prepared by the other students and provide feedback on them and react to feedback given to them.
- Thesis pre-defenceThe file(s) must be submitted 2 hours before the start of the seminar.
- TestWritten test based on materials covered during the course.
- Academic writingExamine the set of papers carefully, explore what academic vocabulary is used to describe different sections of the paper. Prepare a list of 15-20 useful phrases used in the examined papers.
