Abstract

"These two independent courses on the contemporary Middle East and North Africa are devoted to the geography, history, politics, economics, society, religion, literature, arts and cinema of the region. Participation in the first course does not require special prerequisites, however, the prerequisite for participating in the second course is to pass the first course. Two principle thematic questions generally run throughout these courses, linking their various sections: “What, if anything, is distinctive and exceptional about the Middle East?” and “How has the Middle East changed during the modern age?”Students will be introduced to the use of a range of the most up-to-date international sources relating to the study of the contemporary Middle East and North Africa, including reference and survey works, studies of subjects, and internet resources. The principal objectives of these courses are to lay the foundations for a deeper study of the Middle East and North Africa while facilitating acquisition of intellectual and personal transferable skills."
