Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course is aimed to explore the following issues: cultural diversity as a global factor of communication; intercultural dialogue as a social and cultural phenomenon; types and models of the intercultural dialogue; capacity-building for engaging in the intercultural dialogue; tolerance as the basic principle in the intercultural dialogue modelling; the intercultural dialogue ethics; education and training for the intercultural dialogue efficiency.

  • The purpose of the discipline is the formation of students' competencies in building, modelling, monitoring and regulating intercultural dialogue with their ability and willingness to take corrective actions based on their knowledge and skills in the spheres of cultural differences, principles of cultural dialogue, factors and conditions of intercultural dialogue efficiency, intercultural ethics, sensitivity, trust, empathy, and tolerance.

  • Students acquire a multiple approach to conceptualizing the "dialogue" phenomenon, get a profound understanding of the “dialogicality” phenomenon, obtain the skills of analyzing the intercultural dialogue particularities

  • Students distinguish tolerance and intolerance in communication, analyze the roots of toleration and non-toleration, and can apply tolerant thinking and behaviour in interaction
  • Students develop competencies for the intercultural dialogue modelling appropriateness and efficiency
  • Students interpret the concept of diversity, analyze its types and can apply diversity strategies in communication
  • Students facilitate intercultural dialogue in different contexts and can assess its appropriateness and effectiveness
  • Students model prerequisites and outcomes of the intercultural dialogue with due consideration of goals in different settings and for different target audiences

    Analysing a specific real-life case of inter-faith (inter-religious) conflict, exploring the causal relations, considering feasible opportunities to solve the conflict by means of an inter-faith dialogue
