Course Syllabus
Abstract
Pre-requisites: basic knowledge of Russian history at the level of high school. Russian History course for non-historians at HSE university is aimed at forming common civic identity of Russian society via developing historical consciousness and ability to reflect on diachronic and synchronic processes, events, and phenomena in Russia and in the world in their dynamics and interconnection based on the principle of historicism and achievements of the modern historical scholarship and related humanitarian disciplines.Russian History course combines linear-chronological and problematic principles based on the main stages of Russian history: Rus in the IX- first third of XIII centuries, Russian lands from mid-XIII to the end of XV centuries, Muscovite Russia in the XVI-XVII centuries, Imperial Russia, the Soviet era, the modern Russian Federation. The emergence of the Russian state as well as social, economic, cultural, ethno-confessional processes on the territory of modern Russia will be considered in the course based on primary and secondary sources.Russian History course also includes information about the most important processes and events in world history making it possible to put the history of Russia in a context, show it as an integral part of the world historical process and evaluate the contribution of Russia to the development of the world civilization. Learning Objectives
- • Cultivate the students’ ability to reflect upon processes, events and phenomena in Russia and in the world in their dynamics and interconnection based on the principle of historicism;
- • Provide students with understanding of major stages and background of emergence of the Russian state;
- • Outline key social, economic, cultural, ethnic-confessional, etc. processes that took place on the territory of modern Russia;
- • Develop the primary skills of problematic and contextual analysis of primary and secondary sources of major periods and issues of the Russian history;
- • Help the students to form an idea about the role of Russia in world history and culture;
- • Introduce a primary idea about the principles and methods of presenting the results of one’s research in oral and written forms.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- • Demonstrate the ability to reflect upon processes, events and phenomena in Russia and in the world in their dynamics and interconnection based on the principle of historicism;
- • List and explain major stages and background of emergence of the Russian state;
- • List, describe and analyze key social, economic, cultural, ethnic-confessional, etc. processes that took place on the territory of modern Russia;
- • Demonstrate the use of primary skills of problematic and contextual analysis of primary and secondary sources of major periods and issues of the Russian history;
- • Describe and analyze an understanding of commonalities and peculiarities of Russia’s development in the world historical context;
- • Describe, analyze and explain the role of Russia in world history and culture;
- • Demonstrate a primary idea of the principles and methods of presenting the results of one’s research in oral and written forms.

- The emergence of the Rus in the world historical context.
- Rus in the end of the X – beginning of the XIII century and the medieval world of Europe and Asia.
- Rus in the XIII-XV centuries and medieval world of Europe and Asia.
- The world on the eve of the modern period: Russia in the XVI-XVII centuries.
- The Russian Empire and the Atlantic world in the XVIII century.
- The Russian Empire and the world in the long XIX century (1801–1917).
- The revolution in Russia and the world history.
- The Soviet Russia and the world in 1922–1941.
- The USSR in the World War II.
- Soviet Russia and the world in 1945–1991.
- The Post-Soviet Russia and the world in 1990s.
- Russia and the world in the XXI century.
Assessment Elements
- Test of basic knowledge and competencies in historyDuration – 40 minutes. Includes 20 questions of 4 types: type 1 – chose 1 out of many, 5 questions; type 2 – choose several out of many, 5 questions; type 3 - establish the sequence; type 4 - establish correspondence.
- Project
- Seminar activitySeminar activities include the discussion of the required topics/issues during which the students have to demonstrate the acquaintance with primary and secondary sources suggested for the discussion.
- ExamWritten exam with essay-type questions.
