Course Syllabus
Abstract
This Chinese language course (Professional Level) is designed for non-native learners of Chinese who have taken approximately three years of regularly paced college-level Chinese. It aims to acquire and improve skills in the main types of translation, considering the specifics of intercultural communication, and to prepare students for the business world in contemporary Chinese societies, including contemporary usage of business Chinese, Chinese business culture and customs, and preparation for working and living in China. Students will learn specialized business and economic expressions and the principles of business correspondence in Chinese. Class meetings will focus on the topic of the week and authentic materials, where we work through vocabulary, sentence structures, text reading and conversations, as well as its application in the real business world environment. The overall goal of this course is to bring students’ Chinese proficiency to a more advanced level and help them build upon their fundamental Chinese language communication skills by using professional and formal business tool such as letters, reports, and oral presentations in structured business environments.At the end of the course students will achieve С1 level according to the CEFR.
Learning Objectives
- • communicative competence – developing communicative skills through speaking, listening, reading and writing in communicative scenarios and topics chosen for the course;
- • language competence – learning new language units (orthographic, phonetic, lexical, grammar) related to communicative scenarios and topics of the course; learning about language phenomena in the foreign language, about various ways of expressing ideas using the native and foreign languages;
- • socio-cultural competence – introducing students to the culture, traditions and realia of the country whose language they are learning; developing skills of presenting their country and its culture when communicating with foreigners;
- • cognitive competence – developing general and special academic skills; familiarizing students with available ways of autonomous learning of a foreign language and culture, ICT included.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- - students will demonstrate oral proficiency at the advanced level
- - students will demonstrate the ability to present in class for 10 minutes with minimal notes
- - students will produce a range of writing from simple written description to half page report at the advanced level
- - students will demonstrate comprehension of authentic business topics drawn from textbook
- - students will learn to successfully discuss topics related to business in China (arrival, hotels, formal meetings, scheduling, business banquets, negotiation, factory visits and payments)
- - students will display the ability to analyze basic topics related to doing business in China drawn from textbook topics
- - students will display the ability to analyze and compare textbook business topics to their home culture.

Assessment Elements
- In-class assignmentDuring the semester there are grades for oral and written work. Written Classwork consists of various assessment activities conducted in class during the course: vocabulary and character quizzes, written translations, etc. In-class oral assignment consists of such activities as retelling the text, dialogue practice, conversations, group discussions, presentations etc. The grades for these assignments are entered into the the electronic journal into the rows “written grade” and “oral grade”. The grade for the in-class assignment is calculated according to the following formulae: GIn-class assignment = 0,5 * Goral + 0,5 *Gwritten
- Final exam in 2nd moduleExamination in 2nd module is a written examination, which is held for all students of the group during the exam session.Examination is conducted in a form of writing task (lexico-grammatical test; sentences and texts for translation from Russian into Chinese and vice versa, duration – 90 minutes). Writing task includes using grammar and vocabulary units in writing on topics covered during the course. Student has to demonstrate consistent facility in the use of language, demonstrating syntactic variety, appropriate word choice and idiomaticity. Evaluation of the written task will be based upon the following components: content, vocabulary, grammar.
- Final exam in 3 moduleThe oral exam is carried out on a separate day during the exam session. It includes materials introduced in classes up to the day of the exam and has got three parts: 1) Translation from Russian into Chinese and vice versa 2) Topic Presentation/Conversation. This part of the test starts with a one to two minute presentation by the candidate on a topic which s/he will have prepared in advance. The teacher/Examiner will follow up the presentation with specific spontaneous questions on the topic, bringing the total time for the Topic Presentation and Topic Conversation to approximately five minutes. In the Topic Conversation, candidates should be able to respond to the teacher/Examiner’s questions in a spontaneous and natural manner. It is the extent to which candidates can manipulate their prepared material according to the needs of the teacher/Examiner that determines their marks: once discussion of the prepared topic begins, candidates must not be allowed to deliver a prepared monologue or a series of obviously prepared replies.
