Course Syllabus
Abstract
The target audience of the course “Old Amharic” are the students of the 5th year, who possess advanced knowledge of Modern Amharic and are able to read and analyze complex texts in Amharic
The corpus of the so-called Old Amharic literature known to this date is relatively small, but it is of a special interest both for the study of the nascent Amharic literature and for the investigations of the history of Amharic. The corpus is heterogeneous both in genre and in linguistic characteristics. Among the known Old Amharic texts one finds religious and secular compositions, prosaic (religious treatises, church regulations, exegetic literature, apocryphal narratives, medical treatises, magical texts) and poetic (“Royal songs”, panegyrics, religious poetry). The language of the most ancient samples of Old Amharic, the so-called “Royal songs”, considerably differs from Modern Amharic, and are hard to understand even for native speakers. Later Old Amharic compositions are characterized by a language less complicated and more similar to Modern Amharic. Yet, they also contain a number of features absent from Modern Amharic, the analysis of which sheds light on the origin of quite a few Modern Amharic forms. The course includes an overview of the Old Amharic corpus, a description of the most prominent linguistic features of Old Amharic texts (in comparison to Modern Amharic and other modern Ethio-Semitic languages), reading of and comment on selected Old Amharic texts.

- Целями освоения дисциплины «Староамхарский язык» являются: • получение знаний об истории изучения староамхарского языка; • знакомство с основными типами староамхарских памятников; • знакомство с наиболее репрезентативными образцами староамхарских памятников; • приобретение навыков чтения и анализа староамхарских текстов; • приобретение навыков работы с основными изданиями и справочными пособиями по староамхарскому языку.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Учащиеся знают основные произведения на староамхарском языке. Знают основные научные труды и обзорные работы, посвященные староамхарским текстам.
- Учащиеся знакомятся с образцами «Царских песен», умеют характеризовать их текст с точки зрения лингвистических особенностей
- Учащиеся умеют перечислять основные типы прозаических староамхарских текстов, с помощью словаря и справочных пособий читать прозаические староамхарские тексты.
- Учащиеся умеют перечислять основные типы поэтических староамхарских текстов, с помощью словаря и справочных пособий читать поэтические староамхарские тексты.
