Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course introduces students to the current state of Byzantine studies and the structue of the scientific field. Students will learn about traditional methods and fields of historical research (numismatics, sigillography, iconography), the existing scientific schools, the history of Byzantine studies, leading international and national academic instututions, high-ranking journals and book series, critically evaluate the latest theoretical approaches (gender, intersectonal and postcolonial studies, ecocriticism), discuss the connections of Byzantine studies with other historical disciplines (medieval studies, late antique and Eurasian studies). Particular attention is paid to the applicability of digital technologies in Byzantine studies. Students study methods of data visualization (in the field of prosopography and historical climatology) and methods of corpus analysis of the Medieval Greek language (TLG), get acquainted with AI products applied for text recognition of medieval manuscripts (eScriptorium, OCR4All, Transkribus), discuss the prospects for using GIS mapping technologies for historical and geographical reconstruction.

- assesses the peculiarities of Roman monetary system
- correctly uses numismatic terminology
- discusses the place of numismatics among other auxiliary historica disciplines
- recognizes major types of Byzantine coins
- discusses the developments in the iconography of Byzantine coins in relation to Byzantine political, social and intellectual history
- correctly uses sigillographic terminology
- reads, translates and analyzes metrical inscriptions on Byzantine seals
- recognizes major types of Byzantine seals
- recognizes major iconographic types of Christ and Theotokos in Byzantine iconography
- discusses the developments in Byzantine iconography in relation to Byzantine political, economic, social and intellectual history
- uses virtual collections of Ancient and Byzantine coins and seals
- uses online resources for Byzantine Studies (Dumbarton Oaks databases, Pinakes, Clavis Clavium)
- assesses the place of Byzantine studies among other historical disciplines
- critically discusses the applicability of innovative methods of historical research to Byzantine studies (ecocriticism, postcolonial and intersectional studies)
- compares advantages and disadvantages of traditional and electronic editions of Byzantine sources
- uses Byzantine prospographical databases, TLG and TIB
- discusses the applicability of AI instruments in Byzantine studies, its advantages and limitations
