Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course will explore world literature from the early 20th century to the present with afocus on the fantastic as a response to the upheavals and instability of modernity. We use thefantastic as a space for exploring our lived reality. It helps us to figure out who we are, but ourfantastic texts also reveal what our society values and what we fear. Texts—including shortstories, poetry, novels, fine art, and films—will feature the voices and experiences ofmarginalized groups. Analysis and discussion in the classroom will focus on issues of society,culture, and social justice
