Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is designed to improve students’ critical thinking, oral fluency and advanced vocabulary development through discussions about world cultures both in the historical and modern contexts. Content will include articles, videos, movies, music and other forms of cultural transmission with topics chosen from the rich pool of human cultural diversity and experience. The class will require that students become familiar with specific terminology and ideas related to each new facet of culture and history presented in each class and be able to express themselves clearly, logically and with sophistication. Aside from comparing the cultural differences of different regions and times, controversial issues from these topics will also be addressed. Students will not only improve their speaking ability and the vocabulary to express complex ideas about culture and history, they will also improve their ability to think critically about their own experience and their place in the world, A final project will consist of a study and presentation of a unique culture researched by the student.
