Course Syllabus
Abstract
Thiscourseisdesignedtointroducestudentstothebasictoolsfortheempiricalanalysisofindustriesandmarkets.Broadlyspeaking,empirical industrialorganization(EIO)combinesempiricalmethods,data,andmodels toanalyzeimperfectcompetitionandtheorganizationofmarkets.ModernmethodsoftheEIOarewidelyappliedindemandforecasting,mergerreview,antitrustlitigation,marketing,andotherrelatedfields.Moreover, the increasingavailabilityoffirm-andconsumer-leveldata(“bigdata”)opensnewempiricalquestions, that cannotbeansweredwithoutunderstandingthebasicsoftheEIOanalysis. Inthiscourse,wewillcovertraditionalempirical IOmodelsrelatedto •Demandestimationforhomogeneousproducts; •Discretedemandestimation; •Productionfunctionestimationandfirmproductivity; • Identificationofconduct; •Staticentry/exitmodels. Thecourse isassociatedtoexercisesessionsdevotedtopractical applications.Wewill replicatesomeof the empiricalworkhorsemodelsusingsoftwarelikeR(and, ifavailable,MATLAB).
