Course Syllabus

Abstract

Designed to encourage language skills and critical thinking, the course invites students to learn about and reflect on important aspects of the history, culture, and language of Great Britain since 1945. Students are exposed to various materials including primary sources, analytical essays, interviews, and films and encourage to evaluate and interpret those materials and draw their own conclusions about historic, political, social, economic, and cultural phenomena of the country both in the regional and worldwide contexts.

  • to master critical thinking skills by analysing the reasons and outcomes of historical events;
  • to further develop the skills of debating on the topic of the area studies;
  • to gain knowledge on the current political, social, economic, and cultural situation in the UK;
  • to gain knowledge on the historical context of the UK;
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Students will adhere to British behavioral culture taking into consideration English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish attitudes, values, linguistic norms and conversational formulas.
  • Students will review, analyze and evaluate the context, causes, and effects of major political and socio-cultural events in the UK after WWII.
  • Students will analyze the current political situation in the UK, paying special attention to the reasons for and outcomes of Brexit.
  • The students will be able to analyse the potitical system of the UK as it is at present and from the historical perspective.

  • Internal conflicts in the UK in modern era. What is what in modern Britain?

Assessment Elements

    Discussions make part of the majority of classes. Students will be participating in board discussions and minor group discussions.

    The criteria for each written homework may be different.

    The examination takes place during the session period in the form of an oral answer.
