Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course provides students an opportunity to increase their understanding of the role that water plays in human, environmental and economic systems. The major objectives of the course are to learn basic economic principles governing the allocation of various categories of water resources among competing uses; and to gain experience with analytical tools application. The class covers both water quality and water quantity topics. Thus, this course includes the following topics: (1) water: unity in diversity; (2) water as a social and economic good; (3) water demand management and planning for the water sector; (4) role of economic instruments in water resource management; (5) water footprint; (6) the role of water in climate change and green development and circular economy agendas; (7) conflict resolution in water management. Moreover, supply and demand models, non-market valuation techniques, and water pricing will be covered.
Expected Learning Outcomes

- know IWRM, EU Water Framework Directive and OECD Recommendation on Water
- understand the structure of the economics of water resources
