Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course is aimed at students acquiring basic knowledge and competences of the modern Portuguese language, including phonetics, graphics, normative grammar and vocabulary in the amount provided by the course. This course prepares students to use Portuguese in their further academic studies or/and in their future carrier, which means to develop their communicative skills in Portuguese at the A1-B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in multiple contexts such as reading and listening comprehension, written and oral expression, communicative interaction

Learning Objectives

  • Formation of inguistic competence - mastery of new linguistic means (spelling, phonetic, lexical, grammatical) within the framework of the subject matter and corresponding communication situations; mastering knowledge of the linguistic phenomena of the language being studied, about different ways of expressing thoughts in the native and studied language
  • Formation and development of general foreign-language communicative competence. Foreign-language communicative competence is the willingness and ability to communicate in a foreign language in the context of everyday communication (level A1-A2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in CEFR).
  • Formation and development of intercultural foreign-language professionally oriented communicative competence. Foreign-language professional-communicative competence is the willingness and ability to communicate in a foreign language in the context of intercultural professional communication (level B1-B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in CEFR)
  • Speech competence - the development of communication skills in the four main types of speech activity (speaking, listening, reading, writing) in the framework of the selected subject content and communication situations
  • Development of cultural and sociocultural competence - introducing students to the culture, traditions and realities of the countries / countries of the studied foreign language; the formation of the ability to represent your country, its culture in a foreign language intercultural communication

  • Students apply phonetic rules in practice, read A1.1 level texts, understand the pronunciation of consonant sounds
  • Student read basic tetxts, can use the articles properly, apply the rules of singular and plural forms of nouns and adjectives
  • Students are aware of Portuguese-speaking countries, know the difference between European and Brazilian pronunciation options at a basic level
  • Students are able to reproduce the simplest dialogues on the topic of "Greeting, acquaintance"
  • Students can give a brief description of the living space, translate and create basic texts on the topic of the section
  • Students can create, read and translate sentences using the verbs ser and estar
  • Students reproduce the score from 1 to 20 in Portuguese. They are able to request information, ask again, ask for a favor using forms of politeness
  • Students speak about their working daus (planning) and leisure time Use articulated prepositions; basic prepositions of place and time; reflexive verbs in the present tense; adverbs of place
  • Students are able to conjugate and use irregular verbs in the present tense, read, translate and create their own texts using verbs. They are able to describe the calendar year, seasons, natural phenomena, describe national holidays and traditions inherent in them
  • Students can speak about their families, relations, professions, personal characteristics

  • Students are aware of key facts about Portuguese and Brazilian history, names and places
  • Students name all Portuguese regions, speak about their characteristics and economic development
  • Students have a general view of the political system of Brazil: Parliament, Government, parties, President

  • Acquaintance with leading Portuguese and Brazilian newspapers and TV channels.
