Course Syllabus

Abstract

A course that in addition to offering a glance on traditional cross-cultural theories also elaborates on practical experiences that highlight amusing moments resulting from cultural misunderstandings. The course looks at famous mistakes or textbook examples made by translators and politicians, allowing you to look into the complexities of communication between different cultures. It also takes a cross-cultural perspective on Politeness Theory, giving us insights into hedging or how attitudes towards politeness differ between Russian and Anglo-Saxon cultures.
