Course Syllabus
Abstract
The role of financial capitals is crucial in the transition process to net-zero economy and to the achieving the Sustainable Development Goals set by United Nations. The sustainable finance concept emerged from the need to build a financial and economical vehicle towards sustainability, therefore global financial system is restructuring and transforming to the new way of doing business. This course reviews the key concepts and frameworks of sustainable finance and its role to the green economy transition. The sustainable finance course refers also to the different types of sustainable investment mechanisms at different layers at national and regional economies. It contains discussions of practical cases about sustainable issues/investment decisions by financial and non-financial firms. We discuss new sustainability-oriented financial instruments and impediments for incorporating ESG factors in traditional investment analysis.
Learning Objectives
- Provide students with an understanding about the role of finance in the overall picture of sustainable development and circular economy.
- Provide students with understanding about typology, functionality and structure of sustainable investments and finance for business organizations (theoretical approach).
- Provide students with understanding about institutional and regulatory frameworks regarding the functionality of sustainable finance in developed and developing countries (practical approach).
- Prepare students for practical exposure to identify and understand the functionality of sustainable finance in the overall business and operational functionality within a business organization.
- Provide students with an understanding about main concepts about: sustainability and circular economy (past, present and future).
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Analyze and identify key sources of value creation for organizations in the context of sustainability and green economy
- Develop understanding about the role of regulatory institutions in the context of sustainable finance.
- Identify key research direction in the area of sustainable finance development.
- Identify, determine, and evaluate the impact of sustainability on different types of capitals.
- Prepare the assessment of the company’s sustainability profile in the process of investment decisions.
