Abstract
The course ‘Eastern Christianity and the Iranian World’ is designed for fourth-year students. The aim of this course is to give students an idea of Iranian-language literature related to the Christian tradition. The Iranian-speaking world is understood as the whole area of distribution of Iranian languages from the population of Iran proper in the narrow sense to the communities living in India and China in different periods. Not only Christian texts proper, such as the famous ‘Persian Diatessaron’ (13th-14th century text in a 16th century manuscript), which contains unique traces of extant apocryphal monuments, but also Muslim Persian-language works written under the influence of Christian literary tradition or demonstrating the attitude of Iranian Muslim authors to Christianity, are considered. The course thus covers a wide range of writings reflecting the relationship of the Iranian-speaking world to the Christian tradition from the Sassanid era to the late Middle Ages.
