Course Syllabus

Abstract

Initially we will examine the concept of “welfare state”, social policy regimes and other concepts. We will focuses on the social problems a society faces and will analyze the causes and consequences of such problems. We’ll consider challenges with respect to concepts, theories, data, and policy approaches, and compare across regimes. The second course section will be devotes to specific, contemporary social policies in different contexts through country case-studies in different regions with their differing economic, demographic, institutional, and political characteristics. We will compare across policy areas associated with the welfare state, including education, health, family policy, housing, and other domains.

  • The main goal of the course is developing the skill of social policy analysis in comparative perspective. The main learning outcome of the course is ability to use different theoretical approaches to understanding social policy regimes. Students will have a deeper understanding of types of welfare systems and develop skills to critically analyze social policy and think creatively about alternatives to problems. Students will get the knowledge about contemporary experience of social policy implementation in different countries and will be able analysis the social problems and social policies in comparative perspective. The course develops academic skills in reading, writing and presentation.
