Immersion of HSE Lyceum students in the values of museum inclusion

On October 5, 2023 the Museum "In Silence" and the International Laboratory for Social Integration Research held a discussion with students of the 10th grade of the HSE Lyceum on the possibilities of studying various aspects of inclusion and communities of people with disabilities in the museum space.

The staff of the Museum "In Silence" conducted an excursion for the lyceum students, which immersed the participants in the culture of the deaf community. In addition to presenting norms and values corresponding to the social model of understanding disability, real stories from the lives of deaf and hard of hearing people. During the meeting, the audience was invited to learn the Russian sign language basics, to edit their own name and remember basic gestures that can be useful in everyday life.

After the tour, Ekaterina Dolgova, a research assistant at our Laboratory, who has been researching museum inclusion for various categories of visitors for more than 3 years, spoke about her scientific path in this field, shared her own experience of interacting with people with sensory perception features, as well as insiders related to the practical building of inclusion in Moscow museums. During the conversation, special attention was paid to ethics and specifics of building communication with blind and deaf people, depending on their self-identification. It was also noted that the dynamically developing areas of inclusion, social policy and integration have a high research potential.
