Round table 'Violence in modern society and the fight against it' for the HSE master's students with the experts from "Nasiliu.net" ("Stop.Violence") and Consortium of Women’s NGO
On May 22, students of the Master's Program 'Population and Development' and and 'Comparative Social Research' took part in the round table 'Violence in the modern society and the fight against it' within the course 'Gender and Development'. Guest experts took part in the round table: founder and the director of the NGO 'Center for dealing with the problem of violence "Nasiliu.net" ("Stop.Violence")' and a lawyer from Consortium of Women’s NGOs Valentina Frolova.
Each presentation was accompanied by a discussion, some people provided examples of their personal experience with violence and combating it in their lives. An expert opinion was also expressed by Anna Rivina, the founder of “Nasiliu.net”. Lawyer Valentina Frolova, who shared her experience in litigation and considered violence from a legal point of view, made cognitive speech. She highlighted the importance of tackling gender-based violence in the framework of human rights. During the event, improvements to existing anti-violence tools were proposed.
At the round table, students made their presentations on a wide range of issues related to violence such as: violence against women and girls as gender-based violence, types of violence (psychological, physical, economic violence, interpersonal and domestic violence, etc.). In addition, examples of legislation against domestic violence and government programs of different countries were touched upon. Each presentation was accompanied by a discussion, some participants gave personal examples of how they were fraught with violence. Expert commentary about the problem of domestic violence in Russia and abroad was expressed by the invited guests. Anna Rivina, the founder and head of the “Nasiliu.net” ("Stop.Violence"). Foundation, stressed the need for a relevant law to be adopted in Russia, and the lawyer from the Consortium of Women’s NGOs Valentina Frolova shared her experience in protecting victims of domestic violence designating the importance of addressing gender-based violence in the context of human rights.
In the discussion, measures to improve existing tools to combat violence were proposed.
The round table was organized on the initiative of the lecturer of the course 'Gender and Development' for the students of the Master's Program 'Population and Development', co-head of the study group 'Comparative Study of the Situation of Women and Men in Public Authorities', senior lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences Valeriya Utkina.
