III International Research Conference"Culture in society, between groups and across generations"
May 30th - June 1st the III International Research Conference "Culture in society, between groups and across generations”, organized by the International Laboratory for Socio-Cultural Research at the Expert Institute of the Higher School of Economics took place in Moscow.
The conference commenced with a welcoming speech by the head of the International Laboratory for Socio-Cultural Research, tenured professor of HSE, Nadezhda Lebedeva.
The first session of the conference was " Values and Value Transmission in Comparative Perspective", with Lebedeva N. as the chair. It included the reports on intergeneration values transmission and well-being among three generations of Ossetians and Russians in RNO-A; the role of parent and child values, family cohesion in child subjective well-being; intergenerational value differences in Latvia and Central Russia; intergenerational transmission of values in urban and rural area; as well as the cultural transmission and societal change in the period of economic transformations
The second session of the Conference, "Social Capital and Economic Attitudes", was chaired by Tatarko A., and contained reports devoted to cross-cultural analysis of the relation between basic values and attitudes toward corruption; intergenerational family ties in Russia; strength and positivity of religious identification as predictors of the attitudes towards economic involvement among Orthodox Christians and Sunni Muslims in Russia; institutional changes in a transition economy; the gender aspects of work values and job preferences in Europe; The relationship between values and predictors of economic behavior among Korean and Russian students; checking the validity of the anomie and alienation scale across countries; and the empirical study of the institutional basis of economic activity.
The first day of the conference was concluded with the session "Identity and education in a multicultural society", chaired by Kotova M., which had reports on The Impact of Socioeconomic Status and Population Size on the use of the Tatar language at home; Social and psychological factors of successful intercultural adaptation of students from Uzbekistan in Russia; Interrelation between the Strategies of national identity maintenance and Attitudes toward Multiculturalism: the case of Russia; Value Orientations and Religious Identity structure in different religions, as well as The Representations of Social-psychological Aspects of a Cosmopolitan Identity.
The second day of the conference was devoted fully to intercultural relations. All sessions were chaired by the co-director of the ILSCR, Honored Professor of the Queen's University in Canada John Berry, and contained reports on the problem of studying the migrant welfare in Canada; the comparative analysis of intercultural relations in Latvia and Azerbaijan; mediating role of the identities incompatibility in the relationship between discrimination and acculturation strategies of two generations of Russians from North Caucasus; a comparative study of acculturation among the groups of migrants in Moscow; intergenerational analysis of the role of identity in intergroup relations Russian North Caucasus; the Russian multiculturalism in the media; urban environmental quality as quality of life indicator in cross-cultural perspective; understanding of culture in a multicultural world, acculturation profiles of Russian-speaking immigrants in Belgium and their level of socio-economic adaptation; social and psychological predictors of religiosity among Orthodox Christians, Muslim religious identity in the system of intergroup interaction and the difficulties that teachers of English Anglo-Saxon origin experience when working with the Russian adult students.
The conference was concluded by the final word of Lebedeva N.M. and John Berry, who summed up the conference and thanked all the participants for their meaningful reports.
