Eduard Baranov Awarded N.D. Kondratiev’s Prize

HSE Tenured Professor Eduard Baranov has been awarded the N.D. Kondratiev Prize of the Presidium of Russian Academy of Science.

The award, named in honor of the outstanding Russian economist Nikolai Kondratiev, was established by the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1992. It is awarded to the authors of outstanding works in the field of general economic theory. Previously, renowned academic economists such as Victor Polterovich and Leonid Abalkin have been awarded the prize.

For a long time Eduard Baranov worked at the Central Economic Mathematical Institute. He is one of the most respected and knowledgeable specialists in the analysis and planning of inter-branch balances in Russia. In the 1960s he received the USSR State Prize for his research.

With the beginning of market reforms, Eduard Baranov continued his studies at the Centre for Economic Conjuncture under the Government of Russia. Together with Vladimir Bessonov, he led the monthly calculation of the time series of the index of industrial production. As noted in the decision of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the prize has been awarded to Eduard Baranov ‘for the series of works on the theory and methodology of statistical representation and mathematical modeling of economic processes’.

Eduard Baranov joined HSE in 2009, where he heads the Department for Analysis of Real Economy Sector Industries and Foreign Trade of the Centre of Development Institute.

He has developed a methodology that helps to assess the current state and changes in the development of specific industries and in the Russian economy as a whole.
