Conference at HSE CREATIVE HUB Explores Key Trends in Art in 2023-2024
In late June, the HSE CREATIVE HUB hosted an expert conference titled 'Exhibition Season Trends,' focusing on recent tendencies in contemporary art. Prominent art critics and artists discussed landmark exhibitions, trends for 2023-2024, and their potential impact on the developments in this field in the near future.
According to Alina Streltsova, PhD, art critic and editor-in-chief of ‘Iskusstvo’ Art Magazine, the shaping of global trends did not occur in the last two years but began much earlier, during the pandemic. She particularly focused on the relationship between a contemporary museum and its visitors. The art critic observed that 'an art exhibition is a form of dialogue where the viewer is just as important as the artist.' She also believes that this engagement between art and the individual should encompass emotions, feelings, and experiences—everything we go through.
According to Irina Saminskaya, project manager at the Winzavod Foundation in Support of Contemporary Art, artists today 'are concerned about gender issues and mental states, about the challenges of migration, the lack of home, the illusion of home, and the loss of stability—essentially the same issues faced everywhere around the world.' Saminskaya shared a few details about the exhibition 'What are you afraid of?,' currently hosted by the Winzavod Centre for Contemporary Art in its White Hall and Red Hall. The exhibition aims to explore various fears, including those faced by the artists.
Daria Pyrkina, Curator of the 'Visual Studies' Master's track at HSE Art and Design School, introduced the student exhibition ‘Everything Evermore All at Once,’ recently launched in the new HSE ART GALLERY at Winzavod. Explaining the title of the exhibition, Daria says that it refers, 'among other things, to the image of multiverse multiplicity, temporality and various turns of historical development from the film "Everything Evermore All at Once."' The exhibition examines the tendency of the young generation today to pursue their desires without limitations.
Evgeniya Buravleva, member of the Moscow Union of Artists and winner of the Moscow Art Prize, presented her project 'Malaya Rodina' ('Small Homeland’), tracing its progress from the original idea to full implementation. Her work reflects on life and events in Russian regions, and on the artist's personal experiences and feelings. According to Buravleva, she has been able to connect with exhibition visitors through her landscapes.
Daria Kovalskaya, researcher of contemporary theatre and director, presented the project 'Collectors of Experience,' which culminated in the play 'Testifying for a Witness' about victims of repression. Speaking about the phenomenon of social theatre, the director observes that there are generally two trends or types of theatre: 'There is theatre that gives you a voice, and theatre that takes your voice.' She believes that the theatre affiliated with the Gulag History Museum represents the latter type, taking your voice to amplify it.
HSE CREATIVE HUB is an urban space for discussion and research, providing a platform to showcase the opportunities and projects of the HSE Art and Design School and Institute for Creative Industries Development to customers, partners, and colleagues. This space serves as a meeting place, facilitating interactions between developers and businesses, authors and their audiences, and professionals in niche segments of the creative economy with the broader public.

HSE Art and Design School Hosts Stand at Young Contemporary Art Fair
Visitors to the blazar art fair—the first major art event of autumn 2021—had the chance to visit the HSE Art and Design School stand to see works by Aleksandra Walz, Katerina Egorova, Polina Shilkinite, and Andrey Valmus. Another six HSE students and graduates took part as independent artists in the fair, which ran from September 8–12.
HSE Embarks on Long-Term Collaboration with Garage Museum of Contemporary Art
In 2018, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art will expand its range of educational projects and embark on a collaboration with HSE in the field of contemporary art and art practices.
