HSE St. Petersburg’s Dorm Voted Best in Russia for 2017

On April 23, the results of the 2017 National Best Dorm Competition were announced in St. Petersburg. The team of HSE’s dorm on 21A Zaporozhskaya Ulitsa was the final winner following an expert evaluation of the dorm’s infrastructure, a legal review, video presentations, and presentations of development programmes.

‘Self-governance at dormitories is one of the fastest developing areas of student life in our country. The mission in St. Petersburg, where over 70% of newly enrolled students come from other cities, is not only to give each student a place to sleep, but provide them with all the conditions necessary for adapting to a new environment. Student self-governance bodies are the best way to address this task – this way work is not only organized between students and the administration, but also among students themselves. The results of the National Competition confirm that St. Petersburg is one of the strongest centres for developing student self-governance,’ said Alexander Nizov, Chairman of the St. Petersburg Student Council.

Today, there are about 170 student dorms in St. Petersburg. A total of 48 dorms were involved in the St. Petersburg stage of the competition, and 13 dorms from all over the country made it to the finals for the best dorm award.

The competition consists of three stages: a) long-distance, where applications are accepted and experts chose the finalists; b) on-site, where a committee visits the dorms to look at the buildings and rooms; and, finally, c) the final stage, where students are tested for the knowledge of legal regulations, as presented in a video about the dorm, and a programme for development.

Roman Valiev (third-year student of Logistics and Supply Chain Management), Arseny Sattarov (second-year student of Law), and Anastasia Baradulina (second-year student of Public Administration), with the help of Vyacheslav Zhelesky (first-year student of Law), Arslan Karimov (first-year student of Logistics and Supply Chain Management), and Valery Chazov (first-year student of Logistics and Supply Chain Management), supervised by Alexandra Guseva, a Counselor, not only gave a quality presentation for their dorm, but also were able to win first prize.
