HSE Art and Design School’s End-of-Year Exhibition Takes Place at Winzavod and MMOMA
In mid-July 2024, the HSE Art and Design School celebrated the results of the 2023/24 academic year at two venues in Moscow. The exhibition entitled ‘Collection: The Order of Things’ opened at HSE ART GALLERY at Winzavod and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA) on Gogolevsky Boulevard. Over 150 artists whose projects were selected through an internal competition participated in this year's event.
At the end of each academic year, the HSE Art and Design School hosts a large end-of-year exhibition, showcasing the works of students, graduates, and teachers from various educational programmes, including communication design, illustration, photography, and contemporary painting. This year's theme, ‘Collection,’ provided participants with an opportunity to creatively explore this concept.
‘The main theme for the end-of-year exhibition is usually determined at the beginning of the academic year, so that interested students could work on it throughout the season,’ explained Alexandra Kuznetsova, head of the Contemporary Art field of studies, artist, and exhibition curator. ‘This makes the exhibition cross-disciplinary, and we share the current context with all our students, trying to engage them by offering broad themes. Anyone can participate in the open call we announce—fashion designers, environmental designers, programmers, game designers, and artists,’ she added.
At the ‘Collection: The Order of Things’ exhibition, students explore the phenomenon of collections from various perspectives, offering their unique interpretations. Each project comes with a detailed description, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the world of art and mentally move between the projects, building connections and creating their own individual ‘collection’ from the most inspiring works on display.
Veronika Glushkova, a student of the Contemporary Art bachelor’s programme and author of the project ‘Even Better,’ shared how the idea for her work came about. 'When I was looking for a gift for my niece, I realised that all modern toys were repulsive and frightening to me. I started comparing the toys from my childhood with those available today, and it seemed like the toys in stores were only meant to attract attention.' After researching and analysing the market, Veronika realised that there were many such products that genuinely bothered her. She decided to express her feelings through her project. She bought a toy, heated it with a hair dryer, and moulded the resulting misshaped object in plaster. 'Plaster was deliberately chosen. This material is typically used for training and making drafts before trying more serious materials. The toy created for the project will remain in plaster, it is fragile and could break. But even if it does, it will become even better,' says Veronika Glushkova.
Alena Labudeva, a student of the Media and Design track at the HSE Art and Design School, referred to Lev Manovich when describing her project ‘Range (0.81)’: ‘We turn any unpleasant situation into new media.’ For a long time, the artist has been taking screenshots of her mobile phone conversations with different people and now, using these images and texts, she reflects on how human life is transitioning to digital. According to her, screenshots help track the evolution of an individual—herself. The final exhibition includes 3,000 screenshots. ‘The most challenging part of the work was selecting the most representative screens that would show the stages of my development as a person,’ notes the artist.
Natalya Osipova, a student of the ‘Design and Contemporary Art’ track and creator of the project ‘Broads,’ which has already been included in the collection of Pierre-Christian Brochet, curator of the ‘Contemporary Art’ track at the HSE Art and Design School, talks about the objectification of female bodies. ‘This exhibition is about men buying toys that don’t relate to the true beauty of the real female body and its diversity,’ explains the artist. Through presenting the dolls in an exhibition manner, the author seems to be leaving the perception of the female body behind, deflating the dolls and placing them under glass.
The ‘Collection: The Order of Things’ exhibition is a two-part event that takes place simultaneously at two venues—the new HSE ART GALLERY at Winzavod and MMOMA on Gogolevsky Boulevard. For the second year in a row, the end-of-year exhibition by HSE Art and Design School students will also be showcased at MMOMA. Last season, this exhibition was one of the most popular events in the exhibition programme, attracting over 30,000 art enthusiasts in a month.
The exhibition at HSE ART GALLERY at Winzavod (4th Syromyatnichesky Lane, 1/8, Bldg. 6, Entrance 8, 2nd floor) will run until August 31, 2024.

‘Everything Evermore All at Once’: New Exhibition at HSE ART GALLERY
HSE ART GALLERY, which was established in 2018, has launched a new exhibition area. The first project in the new space opened on May 28, 2024. The exhibition represents works by more than 50 HSE Art and Design School students and graduates in Contemporary Art, Fashion, and Subject Design.
HSE ART GALLERY 2.0: Relaunch and New Space at the Winzavod
HSE ART GALLERY, which was established in 2018, is launching a new exhibition area. This second gallery will be in Winzavod, one of the largest private centres for contemporary art in Russia. The art space on Paveletskaya will become a place for implementing commercial projects and housing exhibitions by HSE Art and Design students and graduates.
Stella Art Foundation Exhibition Featuring Works of HSE Art and Design School Teachers to Last until May 26
The Stella Art Foundation has launched the exhibition 'About All the Things That Live There’ by Curator of the Master’s track ‘Video Art’ at HSE Art and Design School Alexandra Mitlyanskaya, Coordinator of the ‘Photography’ track at HSE Art and Design School Evgenia Solomatina, as well as artist Nina Kotel. The project is curated by Alexey Korsi.
Exhibition by HSE Art and Design School Students Now Open at Fabrika Centre
The Fabrika Centre for Creative Industries is hosting a graduation exhibition by bachelor’s students of Contemporary Art at the HSE Art and Design School. In the exhibition titled ‘Freedom of Absurdity’, the early-career artists present their interpretations of melancholy. The exhibition is open to visitors until April 21, 2024, and admission is free of charge.
‘Winnie-the-Pooh and All, All, All’. Poster Exhibition of Graduates of HSE Art and Design School
Until March 15, the exhibition ‘Winnie-the-Pooh and All, All, All’ will be held in the Children's and Youth Department of the Central City Youth Library named after M.A. Svetlov. Graduates of the continuing education programme ‘Illustration. Basic Course’ decided to take a fresh look at A. A. Milne's beloved fairy tale by drawing incredibly colourful posters.
‘Our Exhibition Is an Attempt to Meet the Challenge of Conceptualism in the Most Radical Form’
On January 18–February 4, 2024, the philosophy and contemporary art exhibition ‘Exercises in Conceptualism’ took place at the Gallery Na Peschanoy (part of the Moscow City Galleries Network). The event posed a philosophical question about the phenomenon of conceptualism through the study of the artistic, institutional, epistemological (cognitive) and ontological (existential) status of explication, an important and little-studied element of modern art.
‘It’s Important to Combine Painting with Modern Technology’
On January 19, the HSE ART GALLERY hosted the opening of a new exhibition, ‘Majors, Minors. Aftertone’, which will last until March 10. The exhibition features works created by students of the HSE Art and Design School as part of their courses on modern painting and creating art projects using photography and neural networks. The exhibition was curated by artists and teachers Olga Chernysheva, Vladislav Efimov, as well as art critic Nicolas Audureau.
Fashion for Strong Women: Emancifashion Exhibition Takes Place at HSE University
In early November, the Emancifashion exhibition, dedicated to the representation of women in art and fashion, took place at HSE University in Maly Trekhsvyatitelsky Pereulok. The event, organised by first-year students from the HSE Media Communications programme, featured works created by students from the Fashion Design programme of the HSE Art and Design School.
