2015: More Students, More Programmes, and Online Courses
On December 25th, 2015, the HSE Academic Council summed up the results of the university’s teaching and learning activities over the past year. Here are some facts and figures from Vice Rector Sergey Roshchin’s presentation.
Who studies at HSE?
The total number of students in various undergraduate and master’s programmes in 2015 was 27,500. This is about 3,000 students more than the previous year. 6% of these students are international, and in addition to this, over 450 students from international universities came to HSE as part of various exchange programmes for at least six months during the 2014/15 academic year.
Who teaches at HSE?
About 2900 lecturers taught students at HSE in 2015 (over 2160 in the Moscow campus). The university is continuing to expand its teaching assistant programme, and in Moscow, there were over 1340 of them. 76 foreign lecturers taught at HSE in 2015 (15 from the U.S., 11 from Germany, 7 from Italy, 6 from Japan, and the rest from various other countries). Almost all of them are part of the HSE staff and the majority of the international lecturers are employed by the Faculty of Social Sciences.
What do HSE students choose?
HSE students have the opportunity to choose a considerable part of their curriculum themselves. In addition to those disciplines directly related to their future profession, they are offered a wide range of courses as minors and optional courses. Minors in intellectual data analysis, management, financial economics, psychology, and legal business environment were most popular in 2015, with each of these topics being selected by over 250 students from various faculties.
Do you speak English?
Internationalization is one of the key features of HSE strategy. The university is consistently increasing the number of English-taught courses and programmes. It all started with just one ICEF, and in 2015, HSE offers 17 English-taught master's programmes and a wide selection of short-term programmes, including Exchange Semesters in Mosow, Saint Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod, as well as a special international Summer University. The plan is to increase the number of English-taught master's programmes to 22 next year. The share of specific English-taught disciplines is also growing, with the St. Petersburg campus leading the trend. Every fourth master’s course and one in every nine undergraduate courses there is taught in English, while all second-year students take an independent external English exam.
What does HSE do online?
The university continues to launch new courses on Coursera, the most popular global online education platform. There are currently about 30 of them available. HSE has also presented its first courses at the National Open Education Platform this year.
We aim to launch even more online courses in 2016, with 80 new courses planned; 54 on Coursera, and 26 through the National Open Education Platform.
50 open optional courses are available for students outside HSE. They are also available via video conference. About 35,000 applications were made to these courses in Moscow, and four of these open optional courses are taught in English.
