Faculty of Computer Science Opens Joint Department with MTS
HSE University’s Faculty of Computer Science is creating a joint department with MTS, one of Russia’s largest mobile operators and a leading provider of digital services. It will enable over 500 students annually to do research, attend classes in specialised disciplines, and solve real company cases.
The specialised department will work in three areas: generative models of artificial intelligence, Big Data and work with data, as well as the creation and support of infrastructure for big data. Based on the training results, the best students will be able to undergo an internship in the company.
Ivan Arzhantsev, Dean of HSE University’s Faculty of Computer Science
‘An important area of the faculty’s work is the development of partnerships with leading Russian companies and the engagement of their specialists as teachers. We know MTS Digital not only as a reliable partner with whom we have already launched some courses and training projects, but also as an expert that occupies a leading position in key market segments. The new joint department at the HSE University Faculty of Computer Science will provide students with the opportunity to work with relevant problems, as well as allow research teams to implement joint applied projects.’
The department’s lecturers will include company experts with practical experience in the fields of big data and deep machine learning. Future plans include not only the implementation of disciplines related to data analysis, but also various educational projects in other areas of the company’s activities (cloud technologies, cybersecurity, development) and contests and hackathons with prize funds. Pavel Voronin, First Vice President for Technology at MTS Digital, will head the department.

‘We have worked with HSE University for over a year, and with each new project we are trying to update and scale up the curricula more and more. Generative artificial intelligence is the most important trend in modern technologies—one which will radically change people’s lives in the next few years. It is very important to learn to work with transformer networks and convolutional neural networks now in order to feel confident in the future and create GAI. We are glad that we can give this opportunity to the students of HSE University.’
HSE University and MTS have a long history of cooperation. MTS AI is one of the three partners of the HSE Centre for Artificial Intelligence. The creation of a specialised department—the largest project in the partnership’s history—is the logical continuation of this cooperation. The department will fully begin its work in September 2023.
