Doctoral Student Pursues Cross-Cultural Research in Russian and Italian Primary Education

In May, Lucia Bombieri, a PhD student and intern researcher at the HSE International Scientific-Educational Laboratory for Socio-Cultural Research, delivered a report entitled ‘Instructions and Empathy: Teachers’ Role in Changing Intercultural Relations in School Settings’. Her report presented the preliminary results of a quasi-experiment undertaken in Italy and Russia with the aim of investigating teachers’ role in changing children’s responses towards migrant peers in a socio-cultural and cross-cultural perspective. Participants included teachers and students in the final year of primary school from different cities and regions in northern Italy and the Moscow region.

Students Make Jewelry at the HSE Art and Design School

In 2018, a new specialization  ‘Jewelry Art and Object Design in Fashion’ opens up for Bachelor students at HSE’s Art and Design School. It will provide broad training for jewelers, managers and even brand managers. This profile has evolved from an elective. Students of the discipline are already working on their own jewelery brands. Head of the programme ‘Fashion’, Anzor Kankulov, and jeweler and curator of HSE’s Art and Design School, Slava Fomin, told HSE News Service what the new profile will teach and how.

HSE Elaborates a New Development Programme

In June, an extraordinary Academic Council session, which attracted a broader range or HSE staff and students, discussed the key areas of the university’s development. The ideas expressed, as well as suggestions from faculties and campuses, will provide the basis for a new HSE development programme, which will be discussed at the university staff conference in autumn.

The Centre stems from the International Neurolinguistics Laboratory and brings together researchers in clinical linguistics, special needs education, psycholinguistics, bilingualism, child speech, and gerontolinguistics. The Centre’s academic supervisor is Roelien Bastiaanse, Professor from the University of Groningen (the Netherlands), a researcher into clinical linguistics and founder of EMCL and IDEALAB, unique international educational programmes.

The presentation of UNESCO's report ‘Global Trends in Freedom of Expression and Mass Media Development’ was held at the Higher School of Economics. It was an opportunity to discuss journalism and the growing gap between traditional regulators and modern consumers of media.

Summer University Begins at HSE

In its fifth year already, the HSE Summer University was officially opened on June 20th by Vice Rector, Ivan Prostakov. Over the next 8 weeks, HSE will provide almost 200 students, PhD candidates, postdocs and professionals from all around the world with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge in a wide range of fields. Many of the courses, all of which are taught in English, focus on areas such as politics, history, economics, and Russian and Eurasian cultures.

International Scholars to Discuss Political Epistemologies and Marxism

On June 21-22, the HSE Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities will host a conference on ‘Soviet States and Beyond: Political Epistemologies of/and Marxism 1917-1945-1968’. The event is the second in a series of three conferences organized by an international group of scholars, including Friedrich Cain of the Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies at the University of Erfurt, Alexander Dmitriev at the HSE Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities, Dietlind Hüchtker of the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO) in Leipzig, and Jan Surman, Research Fellow at the Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities.

In 2011, HSE graduate, Irina Demina, launched the startup ‘Button For Life’ (Ru: Кнопка жизни) - a round-the-clock service for elderly people and people with disabilities. Since 2016, Irina has graduated from three programmes offered by the Centre for Continuing Education at HSE’s Faculty of Computer Science and is planning to do more. Irina told the HSE news service about how the knowledge she acquired has helped her to reach new heights in business.
