One of the key topics of discussion was the initial results of the mirror laboratory, a joint initiative between HSE University-St Petersburg and the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM).

Tickling the Nerves: Why Crime Content is Popular
Consumers of content about serial killers watch and read it to experience intense emotions that are often lacking in everyday life and to understand the reasons that drive people to commit crimes. However, such content does not contribute to increased aggression. These conclusions were drawn by sociologists from HSE University. The results of their study have been published in Crime, Media, Culture: An International Journal.

Winners of Student Research Paper Competition 2024 Receive Awards
On February 10, the award ceremony for the winners and laureates of the 2024 Student Research Paper Competition took place at HSE University. Out of the 1,916 students to submit projectsto the competition, 320 participants became winners and laureates and were awarded in four categories: social sciences, economics and management sciences, exact sciences, humanities and creative industries.

As part of the FonCode 2024 contest, the Russian Competitive Programming Federation (CPF) held its first award ceremony. Fedor Romashov, a student of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, won the best competitive programmer award, and Mikhail Gustokashin, Director of the FCS Centre of Student Competitions, was named the best coach.

On February 5, 2025, the National Centre ‘Russia’ in Moscow hosted an awards ceremony for the winners of the fourth season of the All-Russian competition Znanie.Lecturer organised by the Russian Society Znanie (translated as Knowledge in English). The winners included 70 lecturers from 37 Russian regions. Representatives of HSE University were among the best of the best.

HSE ICEF and China’s SWUFE RIEM Launch Double Master’s Degree
In January 2025, HSE University entered into a cooperation agreement with the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) to implement a double master’s that joins ICEF’s Financial Economics programme with SWUFE’s Master's in Finance. Combining the best of China and Russia’s academic frameworks, this new degree offers a unique study-abroad experience. In this collaboration, HSE ICEF is partnering with the Research Institute of Economics and Management (RIEM), which was established at SWUFE in 2006 to facilitate top-level, international research and training in economics and finance.

Open Day: The Future Begins Here
On March 2, an HSE Open Day for prospective undergraduates and specialist students will take place — one of the largest and most significant events for applicants, their parents, and the entire university. Visitors will have the opportunity to speak with students and representatives of educational programmes, plan their admission process, and immerse themselves in the HSE University atmosphere for a day. The event will be held in Russian.
