He has published widely on vRussian Christian spirituality, particularly those strands which deviate from the dominant forms of officially sanctioned practices and beliefs. This makes such groups as old believers and practitioners of 'folk religion' particularly important in his research.
Mikhail has also worked a lot on the many-sided contacts between Russia and Eastern european countries and the mutual exchange of patterns of doctrine and devvotion between them, as well as the vicissitudes of reception of Western theological tradition in late medieval Russia

Religious Violence and Tolerance: the Case of English Reformation
On 23 January 2020, during a regular session of the seminar "Christianity in the History of Medieval and Modern Europe" (run by the Centre in conjunction with the Centre for French-Russian Studies) Anna Seregina gave a paper "Religious Violence and the Co-existence of Different Confessions in England in the 16th 17th centuries". Below is A. Shpirt's report on the talk.
‘As long as we think about the Middle Ages as a dark time, we will remain dark ourselves’
Every era builds its own version of the Middle Ages, and the modern age is no exception. Oleg Voskoboynikov, the youngest full professor at the Higher School of Economics, talks about the reason for the popularity of metaphors that refer to that era, why the ‘Suffering Middle Ages’ group on VKontakte [Russia’s largest social media site — Ed.] is not the same thing as medieval studies and how the desire to be different from everyone else can lead a student to study the Middle Ages.
