Valeria Vlasova researches innovations and how they affect the economy and society. Here, she tells the HSE University Young Scientists project when she first got the idea to go into science, where to read about trends in the development of Russian science and innovation and what her everyday life is like.

Open Doors Day of the English-language Master's Programme (MP) 'Science, Technology and Innovation Management and Policy’ was held online on January 18. The MP has been implemented by the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge HSE University since 2014. Academic Supervisor – Distinguished Professor Dr. Dirk Meissner, Associate Professor Valeria Vlasova and Manager Liana Sarkisyan introduced the programme’s benefits, alumni career trajectories and admission process.

The Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge (ISSEK) at HSE University estimates the trajectories of 76 economies in the Global Innovation Index (GII) from 2017 to 2021 and analyses recipes for innovative success.

This report presented by the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge of the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE ISSEK) is dedicated to the statistical measurement of the creative economy of Moscow.

Russian enterprises have limited opportunities to modernise their technological capabilities independently. Their technological portfolios reveal a high dependence on imported solutions and a limited use of their own developments, HSE researchers discovered.

The innovation performance of firms depends on their ability to innovate in cooperation with external partners. In their study, HSE researchers found that most of innovation in Russian manufacturing happens in a sort of open processes, but extensive cooperation networks are barely detectable. The study was published in the December issue of Foresight and STI Governance.

The sector of science, technology and innovation (STI) is even more nonlinear and complex than the world behind the looking glass from the Lewis Carroll’s story. For companies and countries wishing to claim or secure leadership, it is no longer enough to simply run all guns blazing to stay in the competition over global chains, or even run twice as fast to occupy higher positions. Which strategies lead to success, which skillsets are required for effective management in STI, what trends and metrics should be taken into account, all this was discussed by the members of X International Academic Conference in Foresight and STI on the wide spectrum of county cases and industries, paying special attention to the context of COVID-19.

Valeriya Vlasova took part in the Analytics for Management and Economics Conference (AMEC 2020) that was held in a digital format, September-December, 2020.

The digital era, which has come to stay, is creating demand for ever more competent managers for innovation and R&D. The English-taught master’s programme in Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation offered by HSE University enables its graduates to pursue careers in top IT corporations such as Google and Yandex, research institutions and universities, government agencies and international organizations. It also prepares them to launch successful start-ups.

Evgeniy Kutsenko, Head of the HSE ISSEK Russian Cluster Observatory, shares on his Facebook page his impressions of taking part in the Regional Studies Association conference in Santiago de Compostela (Spain) which took place on 5-7 June, 2019, mentioning particularly interesting topics and presentations.

Is big data going to replace conventional statistical observations of the science, technology, and innovation sphere? Participants of workshops hosted by the ISSEK and a number of partner research centres in Austria and Germany in Vienna on 6–7 March agreed that the role of statistics is only going to increase. The experts outlined the potential for cooperation in the scope of S&T research projects and educational programmes.

The ability to analyse trends is one of the key skills for those who are going to make management decisions in the field of science, technology and innovation. The students of HSE perfect it, studying theory, examining tools and cases. But it is known that knowledge and skills are much better learnt when resonating with the realities of life or with a relevant information agenda. Educational experience is shared by Dmitry Baryakin, a graduate of the master's programme of the ISSEK (HSE).

A number of events happened in late October — early November, important to HSE ISSEK members who combine their work with postgraduate studies (or did, or are about to begin).

Research fellows of the HSE ISSEK Laboratory for Economics of Innovation studied the duration of cooperation in innovation activities. The results are reported in HSE ISSEK information bulletin series “Science, Technology, Innovation”.
