Employment history
Mikhail Tyurkin is an international journalist, media historian and media expert. His field of research includes global media, communication theory, digital platforms, social anthropology, contemporary history and philosophy of history.
Since 2007 till 2009 Mikhail Tyurkin was special correspondent, between 2009 and 2015 he spearheaded the political editorial board of the daily newspaper “Nevskoye Vremya”. As a columnist, he contributed opinion pieces for a number of print and online newspapers in Russia, Germany and Serbia, including “Izvestia”, “Vzglyad”, “Flensburger Tageblatt” and “Večernje Novosti”. Since 2017 till 2018 he was editor-in–chief of the educational portal “Pervaya Liniya”.
As a reporter, Mikhail Tyurkin covered major international events. These include declaration of Kosovo’s independence (2008), presidential elections in Ukraine (2010), Belarus (2010) and Georgia (2013), protests on Maidan Square in Kiev (2014), referendum in Crimea (2014), migration crisis in Europe (2015) and parliamentary elections in Germany (2017). He wrote travel reportages about China, Japan, Serbia, Montenegro and Spain.
Mikhail Tyurkin has won a number of prestigious journalistic awards. These include the Peter Bönish Prize of the Russian-German forum “Petersburg Dialogue” for a series of publications under the general heading “German Lessons”, the St. Petersburg Governor's Award for coverage of the G20 summit in Strelna, the Business Journalism Award “Presszvanie” and the Chekhov Foundation Award for the best publication about China.
In 2015 Mikhail Tyurkin joined the academia. Since 2015 till 2022 he was Senior Lecturer at the Department of International Journalism at Higher School of Journalism and Mass Communications of St. Petersburg State University. He was teaching practical classes for the students of the English-speaking Master's Program "Global Commucations and International Journalism". Since 2022 he became Senior Lecturer at the Media Department of Higher School of Economics (HSE). In 2003 he was appointed to the position of Academic Supervisor of the Bachelor's program “Media Communications” at St. Peterspurgs's campus of the HSE University.
HSE University-St Petersburg Presents Track on Latin America at Festival in 'Sevkabel Port'
On July 13, HSE University-St Petersburg participated in the festival of Latin American countries in 'Sevkabel Port' covering the history, culture and traditions of the region. The festival gathered 12 heads and representatives of diplomatic institutions of the Latin American countries in Russia and citizens of St Petersburg. HSE University-St Petersburg presented the interdisciplinary track on Latin America. It unites courses of three educational Bachelor's programmes in Political Science, Economics and Media Communications. The regional track will become a new stage of cooperation between HSE University and Latin America.

Marina Merkucheva came to HSE University-St Petersburg as an exchange student. Her educational path is different from the majority of international students. Several years ago, Marina enrolled in the National Autonomous University of Mexico and moved from a small village next to Kirov to Mexico City. But in 2023, she decided to come back to Russia to study under the student exchange programme and became a student of the School of Art and Design at HSE University-St Petersburg. In the interview, she talks about the choice of university, explains how education in Russia and Mexico is different and shares her impressions of studying at HSE University campus in St Petersburg.

‘The Trip to India Will Be an Exam for Every Participant’
From October 28 to November 29, 2023, students of HSE University will take part in an international internship at Lovely Professional University (LPU), one of the biggest universities in India. The exchange programme is intended for students of the bachelor’s programme in Media Communications and the master’s programme in Media Production and Media Analysis at HSE University-St Petersburg. The project will culminate in the creation of a documentary film about India, which will be shot jointly by students of HSE University and LPU.
Initiation, Lectures and a Lot of Music: What We Will Remember About HSE SPB DAY 2023
HSE SPB Day has been held at Sevkabel Port in the open air. HSE students were congratulated on the beginning of the academic year by the trustees, faculty deans, and the rousing HSE Dance Club. The first-years had an initiation ceremony, participated in activities from student clubs, and danced to popular songs on the Gulf of Finland. They received well wishes from the professors, representatives of large companies and, of course, student organisations.
