From January 30 to February 1, 2015, the 8^th Contemporary Dance Festival ‘Power of Silence’ took place in St. Petersburg. Fifty-three dancers and dance teams from all over Russian participated in the contest. Three prizes were awarded in the ‘Solo and Duets’ nomination: for the best choreography, the best female dancer, and the best male dancer. Sona Hovsepyan was named as best choreographer, and Diana Mukhamedshina, member of the Dance Company, won the prize for best female performer.

On January 22-23 Norway’s University of Tromsø held the ‘Norwegian Graduate Student Conference in Linguistics and Philology (NoSLiP),’ organized by the Norwegian Graduate Researcher School in Linguistics and Philology.

Marie Arsalidou joined HSE’s Faculty of Social Sciences as Assistant Professor in September 2014. She is getting ready to launch a wide-ranging developmental study examining cognitive capacities in school children. The article ‘Academic Historians in Russian Media: A Selfie-session’ by HSE Professor Irina Savelieva and postgraduate student Zarina Gatina has been published in the journal of the Polish Academy of Sciences ‘Rozprawy z Dziejów Oświaty’.

The famous Dutch computer scientist Wil van der Aalst has been made HSE Honorary Professor for his enormous contribution to the development of research and teaching programmes at the university and for reinforcing HSE’s international reputation.

The latest issue of the HSE LooK brings the Faculty of Mathematics  into the spotlight. The Dean of the Faculty, Professor  Sergei Lando, speaks about mathematical education in Russia then and now and gives his insights into the academic life of the mathematical collective. The editors also welcome aboard new colleagues with international backgrounds and give a short overview of changes that have occurred on HSE website, including new design of faculty profile pages.

Eight students of HSE Perm graduated from ‘Business Strategies in a Global Environment’ – a joint master’s programme run by HSE and the University of Essex.

Yuval Weber, an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, has been with HSE since 2014. A specialist in international relations, Weber has held fellowships at the New Economic School and the Carnegie Moscow Center. He recently spoke with HSE news service about his longstanding interest in Russia, his impressions of teaching HSE students and his advice for international students who are thinking about coming to Russia.

HSE would like to congratulate Udara Peiris, Assistant Professor at ICEF on having his article ‘Collateral and the Efficiency of Monetary Policy’ accepted for publication in the international peer-reviewed journal ‘Economic Theory’.  The article was coauthored by Alexandros Vardoulakis, Economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

Late last year, HSE’s Extreme Sports student club organized a trip for HSE students, instructors, staff, and their friends to an equestrian centre located 150 kilometres away from Nizhny Novgorod, and at the end of winter the club has extended an invitation to one of Georgia’s best ski resorts – Gudauri.
