Andrei Kaplan, ICEF graduate, is currently studying for an MA at MIT. In this interview, he considers what he learned at HSE, how that helped prepare him for taking on a demanding postraduate course in a foreign country, and how US and Russian approaches to education – and jobseeking after graduation — vary.

Karl Bruckmeier is an environmental sociologist and since 2011 he has been a professor at the Analysis of Social Institutions Department at the HSE Faculty of Social Sciences. He talked to the HSE English News Service about the challenges of being an interdisciplinary academic and about the pace of change in Russia in attitudes towards the environment. Anna Chernyakhovskaya began the interview by asking Professor Bruckmeier about his life at HSE.

Winter holidays have come and the New Year’s issue of The HSE Look is here to add to the festive mood. This is a special edition: our international professors and postdocs share winter holiday customs from their countries and offer seasonal greetings to their colleagues. 

At a meeting of the HSE Academic Council, Director of the Center for International Higher Education at Boston College,  HSE International Advisory Committee Member, Philip Altbach was awarded the title of HSE Honorary Professor.

Some of us prefer to decorate a traditional natural or artificial New Year tree. The others suppose that a New Year tree is a perfect object for experiments. We gathered a collection of most original trees in HSE. The collection will be enlarged.

On the 24th of December second year fashion students at the School of Design held PaperShow-2014 to display clothes they had created from the most unexpected materials and textures. These textures have been the focus of their studies.

Aleksandra Sazhina (Khamadieva), Lecturer in the School of Management at the HSE Campus in Perm, presented the interim results of her dissertation research at the 2nd International Winter School of the NES Center for the Study of Diversity and Social Interactions. The school was devoted to ‘The Impact of Cultural and Social Diversity in Economic Development’.

An HSE student team majoring in software engineering and business informatics won in a category of the Hackathon for developers of mobile applications and web-services in Perm. The students developed an application for diagnosing a patient’s condition based on symptoms.

The Latin category of the World DanceSport Federation World Championship took place in December 2014 in Bremen, Germany. Duet Ensemble, which included students from HSE Perm took home the silver medal.

The HSE Student Support Unit organized a trip to Etnomir ethnographic park, where our international students immersed themselves in the atmosphere of old Russian life, played traditional games, and even baked rye bread in a workshop.

With 172 lifts in 5 minutes, he beat his own record at weightlifting of 55 kg weights that he set in June 2014 (153 times in 5 minutes).

Alexandra Dvoytsova, a soloist with Sona Hovsepyan Dance Company, won the silver medal at the world tap dance championships in Riesa, Germany. She scored just one point below the gold medal winner, a dancer from the U.S.
