HSE researchers Timofey Bordachev and Andrei Skriba published a chapter in the LSE’s special report ‘The Geopolitics of Eurasian Economic Integration’.

Ten students from the Faculty of Law at the HSE Nizhny Novgorod received International Legal English Certificates (ILEC) confirming their high level of English proficiency in the legal profession. ILEC is the world’s first Cambridge exam in English for lawyers and diplomats; those who receive it are recognized as professionals who can freely communicate in English on legal topics.

On June 16, 2014, the International Master in Comparative Social Research Open Day will be held at the HSE. The event is organized by the HSE Faculty of Sociology in Moscow and St. Petersburg together with the Laboratory of Comparative Social Research.

In February-March 2014, the HSE launched six new international laboratories following a tender of three-year projects under the supervision of leading international researchers. One of the projects that was approved is the Laboratory of Stochastic Analysis and its Applications. Denis Belomestny, Lead Research Fellow at the Laboratory, agreed to shed some light on his work and plans at the HSE.

In the June Research Papers in Economics (RePEc) ranking, the Higher School of Economics took the lead among Russian economics institutes and centres for the first time in the ranking’s history.

Last year the HSE joined Coursera, the world's largest international educational website. Today the HSE offers a number of open online courses in economics as well as courses in applied mathematics, psychology, and courses at the intersection of these disciplines designed by HSE leading professors. Sergey Stepanov, Assistant Professor at ICEF and the Faculty of Economics, shared his expectations of the new online course he is currently working on in the May issue of the HSE Look.

For the first time at HSE’s St. Petersburg campus, the annual meeting of HSE’s International Advisory Committee (IAC) took place on May 23-24. As is tradition, the discussion focused mainly on the HSE’s development as an international university.

On May 23, 2014 HSE Perm’s Department of Foreign Languages announced the winners of its annual English language Olympiad for first-year students of all departments. The goal of the Olympiad was to identify students who have a deep knowledge of the subject.

Between May 26 and June 7 students can vote in the HSE annual election for best teachers of the academic year. This year not only students in Moscow but at the HSE St Petersburg can vote. So, what do you have to do to register your vote?

The annual contest ‘How I Decided to Come Study at the HSE’ has begun for students and alumni. Anyone who has ever been accepted into the bachelor’s, master’s or post-graduate programmes at the HSE or has attended classes as a visiting or exchange student is sure to recall their particular feelings, images and stories. This year, the contest is taking place for both written and visual submissions.

This issue is once again devoted to teaching. What is the procedure for writing a course syllabus at HSE? What is the LMS? What is teachers’ election? These and other questions will be answered here. We give some advice on how to write a course syllabus. 

The HSE student club for extreme sports ‘X-Sport Club’ has been organizing joint trips for HSE students and staff members, as well as contests in winter and summer sports for 15 years now. Carrying on the tradition, the club is planning several trips for HSE students, lecturers and staff members this year. The programme includes surfing, kiting, wakeboarding, other sports, and popular out-door tourist activities.
