- Appointed as Dean of Arts, I led the establishment of the world’s first Creative Industries Faculty (2001). QUT deans are executive positions, responsible for the faculty budget, and members of the peak university management body (Vice-Chancellor’s Advisory Committee).
Cardiff University (1995-2000)
- Founding Head, School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC), Cardiff University
- Founding Director of the Tom Hopkinson Centre for Media Research, Cardiff University.
- The School (JOMEC) was responsible for its own budget, and the Head answered to the VC (Cardiff was organised by School not Faculty at the time). JOMEC offered a large undergraduate degree in Journalism, Film and Broadcasting; professional fee-paying graduate diplomas in print, broadcast and magazine Journalism, Photojournalism and PR through the world-renowned Centre for Journalism Studies; and research postgraduate degrees through the Tom Hopkinson Centre for Media Research.
- The School returned a ‘5’ in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, up two steps from a ‘3A’ in the 1996 exercise (and a 1 in 1992), with nearly three times the number of staff returned. It went on to become the UK’s leading journalism research centre (REF 2014, 2018).
- I re-joined the School as a part-time research professor (2012-16), and visiting scholar (2016-19).
