Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is aimed at undergraduate students with a previous background in general legal theory and philosophy. Students need a level of English that allows them to understand course materials and lectures in academic English and express their position during in-class discussions. The course aims at giving the students basic knowledge in law & bioethics and prepare them for further studies and research in the bio-legal field (life sciences law).

Learning Objectives

  • The course is aimed at providing an understanding of the legal foundations of bioethics. During the course students will learn: - what bioethics is and how it interacts with law; - what are the most pressing issues in contemporary bioethics and what legal issues they entail; - what are the main approaches to solving bioethical problems and how states address them through their legislation and policy.

  • know major legal issues in bioethics;
  • know basic terminology and conceptual framework in bioethics;
  • understand where these issues come from and what solutions are offered to mitigate their adverse effect in the society;
  • generally analyze and interpret national and international approaches to regulation of various bioethical issues;
  • acquire basic skills in doing research in the field of law & bioethics;
  • understand the impact bioethical knowledge for lawyers and life-science professionals;
  • assist in drafting policy documents on bioethical issues;

  • Introductory lectures: getting to know the rules and the people. Foundations, sources and principles of bioethics.
  • Bioethics & human rights: insights from international and national courts.
  • Law & bioethics in the beginning and end of life.
  • Law & bioethics in organ and tissue transplantation
  • Law and genomics: human cloning, eugenics and policy.
  • Law and testing on living subjects: animal testing, human testing, laws and alternatives.
  • Law & neuroethics.
  • Bioethics and law in (post)pandemic times
