Course Syllabus
Abstract
Data Mining (DM) is closely related to Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. This field focuses on recognising patterns in datasets. The main purpose of DM is to produce and study learning algorithms, that may be implemented with computers and imitate intelligent behaviour in dealing with data, for example in classifying objects into groups.
Learning Objectives
- The aim of this course is to provide the basic skills for analysis of statistical data, in particular for regression and classification purposes. An important objective is operational knowledge of the studied techniques, hence there will be a practical side to the course as well as the theoretical side. We will use the statistical software R for the practical part, but it is not compulsory to be acquainted with R in advance.

- 1. Understanding and ability to present/describe the methods studied in this course in mathematical terms 2. Application of these methods to simple problems/examples 3. Understanding the limitations and benefits when using each of these DM methods 4. Using R software for implementing methods studied in the course

- ExamThe accumulated grade for other control elements does not change during the first re-sit of the examination if it is allowed. The second resit is assessed by a committee and has the same format as the first resit exam, but this time the accumulated grade is zeroed. The student is allowed to bring a calculator and a formula sheet on one side of A4 sheet of paper. The resit takes 2 astronomical hours and takes place between the 1st day of module 3 and the middle of February. Первая пересдача - накопленная оценка по другим элементам контроля не изменяется, а накопленная за элемент контроля "Экзамен", который студент пересдает - обнуляется. Пересдача состоит из письменной работы на 2 астрономических часа, за которые нужно решить 4 задачи. Вторая пересдача уже оценивается комиссией. В этом случае обнуляется накопленная оценка за все элементы контроля. Оценка выставляется по результатам письменной работы на 2 часа. Формат точно такой же, как у экзамена и у письменной работы на первой пересдаче. Как на экзамен, так и на первую и вторую пересдачи разрешено приносить калькулятор и лист с формулами на 1 листе А4, на котором не должно быть никаких слов. Задачи могут быть на любую из пройденных на курсе тем.
