Course Syllabus
Abstract
Targeting Level B2-C1 (Upper-Intermediate and Advanced level) objectives of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the course’s main objective is to provide a communicative learning environment through activities based in real-world, everyday contexts.
In a dynamic and communicative way the course develops all four language skills (i.e. speaking, listening, reading, and writing) in comprehension as well as in producing Korean speech through individual and group work, topical discussions. The focus is on accuracy as well as communication that advance students’ language competence, transferable skills, and cultural awareness.
Learning Objectives
- • communicative competence – developing communicative skills through speaking, listening, reading and writing in communicative scenarios and topics chosen for the course;
- • language competence – learning new language units (orthographic, phonetic, lexical, grammar) related to communicative scenarios and topics of the course; learning about language phenomena in Korean language, about various ways of expressing ideas using the native and Korean languages;
- • socio-cultural competence – introducing students to the culture, traditions and realia of South Korea; developing skills of presenting their country and its culture when communicating with Koreans;
- • cognitive competence – developing general and special academic skills; familiarizing students with available ways of autonomous learning of a foreign language and culture, ICT included.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- 1. Comprehension skills: • Understand main ideas of clear standard input on matters encountered in business communication (Upper-intermediate and Advanced (C-1) levels) both in written and oral speech; • Fully understand texts (both oral and written) of Upper-Intermediate and Advanced (C-1) level on topics covered during the course without a dictionary.
- 2. Producing skills: • Make proper word and grammar choices (Upper-Intermediate level) and adjust speech and writing register to express intended meaning within topics covered during the course; • Express themselves with fluency and accuracy, both orally and in writing, on matters encountered in business communication and covered during the course; • Engage in meaningful conversations on a variety of topics covered during the course.
- 3. Socio-cultural competence: • Demonstrate knowledge of Korean business culture and etiquette, trends within topics covered during the course.

Assessment Elements
- In-class AssignmentIn-class assignment includes writing tasks (grammar and vocabulary quizzes, dictation for translation from Russian to Korean, short writing) and oral tasks (role play, presentation, group discussions etc.). Quizzes and dictation can be given during the first 20 minutes of a class.
- HomeworkAfter every class, student will receive a homework assignment to practice new grammar and vocabulary. It can include the following: 1. Grammar exercises (not graded) 2. Vocabulary exercises (not graded); 3. Listening: You are required to listen to the audio or watch the video and answer questions or fill in the blanks (not graded); 4. Text: You are required to read a text and answer questions. 5. Writing text using given vocabulary and grammar. 6. Prepare a speech on given topic or to be ready to participate in a role play on a given topic. 7. Reciting a dialog/text.
- Unit Final AssignmentUnit final assignment will be given after completion of one unit. It will be generally writing or oral task (role play, presentation). The format and the topics of the oral assignments are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.
- Examination 2nd moduleExamination is carried out in a form of writing task (90 minutes). Writing task is a set of tasks based on topics and language given during the course. Task includes using grammar and vocabulary units in writing. Student must demonstrate consistent facility in the use of language, demonstrating syntactic variety, appropriate word choice and idiomaticity. Evaluation of the writing task will be based upon the following components: vocabulary, grammar, appropriateness of used vocabulary to given situation.
- Examination 3rd moduleExamination is carried out on a separate day during the exam session in a form of oral task (15 minutes per student). It consists of 2 tasks: 1) speech on the topic of “My Future Plans” (50%) and answering questions of the examiner; 2) talk with the examiner on one of the topics covered during the course (50%).
