Course Syllabus
Abstract
In the course, students will learn what determines sustainable urban development. How do cities and regions respond to climate change? What is the role of urban communities? What is a sustainable urban infrastructure? Why the coordination and an open dialog among the stakeholders is important? What is sustainable economic development? What are the key indicators to measure the achievement of sustainable development goals?
Learning Objectives
- To develop an integrated vision of sustainable urban and regional development
- To learn to critically evaluate urban development strategies and policies
- To learn to put knowledge into practice in project work and debates
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Students will start building the tool boxes of concepts and approaches for personal practical work
- Usage of professional vocabulary for the topics in focus of the course
- Comprehensive understanding of main principles of sustainable development
Course Contents
- Introduction to the course ‘governance for sustainable development’
- Main challenges of the climate change
- Planning for the future: resilience planning
- Climate change mitigation: Urban heat island and green rooftops
- Communicative planning and tactical urbanism
- Integrated development planning
- Instruments for coordinated development: i.e. human development index, infrastructure accessibility index

- Individual essay
- Group project / DebatesGroup project assessment will take into account the role each student plays in collective assignments.
