Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course will provide an overview of the most interesting classical studies within the psychological field. Students will gain an understanding of psychological research methods and learn how to critically evaluate theoretical frameworks and empirical studies. We will explore major psychological theories as well as their practical implications. Seminars would include not only discussions or presentations, but also activities for improving critical thinking and interpersonal communication skills.

- identify psychological determinants of human behavior and use psychological terminology to describe it
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Distinguish between descriptive, correlational, experimental psychological research designs
- List major symptoms and consequences of replication crisis in psychology
- Distinguish between direct and conceptual replication
- Explain major theoretical perspectives in psychology: psychodynamic, behavioristic, humanistic, cognitive, evolutionary
- Explain the principles of psychological testing and assessment: standardization, objectivity, test norms, reliability, validity
- Describe stages of moral development
- Define the concept of "zone of proximal development'
- Distinguish between different branches and fields of psychology.
Course Contents
- Introduction to psychological science. Branches and fields of psychology.Psychology as a science. Hindsight bias. The illusion of knowing. Basic research fields: biological, cognitive, comparative, developmental, personality, social, and cross-cultural psychology. Applied areas: clinical, counseling, organizational, and educational psychology.
- Methodological and ethical issues of psychological researchReplication crisis: terms and examples. Direct and conceptual replication. Main causes of replication crisis (HARKing, p-hacking, publication bias, WEIRD sample, etc.). Possible solutions: preregistration and open science.
- Theoretical approaches in psychologyPsychodynamic approach, behaviorism, cognitive approach, biological (neuroscientific) approach, humanistic approach, social-cultural approach. Major concepts and techniques of cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychoanalysis, and person-centered therapy.
- Research methods in psychologyStudy designs: descriptive, correlational, experimental. Types of non-experimental research. Types of experiments & methods for controlling for extraneous variables.
- Emotions, stress, and psychological well-beingStress: definition and types. Theories of emotions (James-Lange, Cannon-Bard, Lazarus, Schachter-Singer). Coping strategies.
- Psychological assessmentPrinciples of psychological testing and assessment: standardization, objectivity, test norms, reliability, validity
- Developmental psychologyStages of moral development. Stages of psychosocial development. Zone of proximal development. Attachment theory
Assessment Elements
- Research project
- Exam testThe computer-based exam test contains up to 30 multiple-choice questions with one or more correct answers. Students allowed to use handwritten or printed notes during the test. Students will have 60 minutes to complete the test.
- Seminar assignmentsEach seminar meeting students get a grade for seminar participation. Depending on the seminar content, one of the three grading methods is used: 1) Short test (50%) + in-class participation (50%). 2) Presentation (50%) + in-class participation (50%). 3) In-class participation (100%).
