Course Syllabus
Abstract
The discipline "The Art of Mongolia and Tibet" is taught in the eighth semester in the fourth year. It is based on such disciplines as "The History of Mongolia and Tibet", "Tibetan Buddhism". The course is dedicated to the study of the artistic culture of Mongolia and Tibet. The field of consideration includes both the aesthetic approach in culture in general, and artistic practices as a specialized field of activity of artists and artisans. The main purpose of the course is to teach students to work with the material of the artistic culture of Mongolia and Tibet as a unique source that reveals the peculiarities of lifestyle, perception and worldview in a particular period of the history of the Mongols and Tibetans. The existence of artistic practices is considered in their relation to other areas of cultural activity and traditional knowledge. The main attention is paid to those monuments and phenomena of artistic culture that occupied a significant place in social processes and intellectual trends. Such for the Mongols and Tibetans is Buddhist art.
Learning Objectives
- to learn to work with the material of the artistic culture of Mongolia and Tibet as a unique source that reveals the peculiarities of the lifestyle, perception and worldview in a particular period of the history of the Mongols and Tibetans.
- familiarization with the basic techniques, formats and types and genres of Tibetan and Mongol art, traditional principles of classification of works and masters, basic concepts about the origin and significance of art, its position in the general system of knowledge
- getting a general idea of historical milestones and development processes in the artistic culture of the Mongols and Tibetans, acquaintance with its outstanding monuments and personalities
- developing of skills of autonomous work with sources on artistic culture (both monumental and textual)
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Able to use basic concepts of the origin and significance of art, its position in the general system of knowledge
- applies acquired knowledge when analyzing art monuments, creating descriptions of museum and private collections
- Able to determine the belonging of particular art objects to a certain style, direction of Mongolian and Tibetan art
- is familiar with the variety of forms and types of decorative and applied art of the Mongols
