Abstract
The main objective of this course is to introduce the impact of traditions on modern Middle Eastern societies to the students of Turkish studies. It also aims to demonstrate how local cultures shape religious practices. The course focuses on a range of significant traditions in Middle Eastern countries, including marriage as a site of cultural celebrations; New Year celebrations with case studies from Israel and Iran; Male circumcision as practiced in the Middle East according to Jewish and Muslim traditions; the celebrations of Muslim religious festivals such as the Prophet Mohammed’s birthday, the Hajj, and the mourning ceremonies. This course aims to delve into areas of modern Middle Eastern cultural aspects which are not always studied in classroom. This will be done through a mix of published and recorded materials including movies and documentaries. The Seminar presentations will cover an endless list of additional topics based on students’ choice.
