Course Syllabus
Abstract
This section of the research seminar focuses on modern social trends and their verbal and non-verbal representations in various types of discourse. Students are invited to look at such diverse, but important phenomena as cancel culture, toxic positivity, patriotism, to name but a few. The respective language means are viewed in the contexts of their actual use; the diacronic aspect is, too, considered whenever appropriate.
Learning Objectives
- to examine evolution of linguistics and identify contemporary linguistic trends
- to promote interdisciplinary integration and collaboration in linguistic research
- to investigate the practical application of linguistics in addressing social issues, thereby recognizing the utility of linguistics in problem-solving context
- to critically evaluate the role and impact of emerging linguistic trends
- to develop students' abilities in critical thinking, research question formulation, and scientific inquiry
Expected Learning Outcomes
- comprehend the foundational concepts of modern linguistics
- familiarize with various research methodologies within linguistics
- develop the ability to critically analyze linguistic materials and case studies
- enhance research capabilities, learning to create precise, relevant research questions and to gather and interpret data from diverse linguistic sources, contributing to various fields within linguistics
- formulate a comprehensive research project, demonstrating capacity to synthesize critical thinking and scientific writing within a specific linguistic discipline
- develop the ability to critically analyze linguistic materials and case studies, identifying underlying messages, intended audiences
