Course Syllabus
Abstract
The Project Seminar trains students to apply theoretical insights around cultural studies, ethnography and media theory for creating their own projects, which can take the form either of a collective academic event or a visual project. The course imagines the intersections between theory and practice, guiding students to engage with the theoretical considerations they have been hitherto taught in the program so as to apply the latter into the creation of projects. The students can either organize an academic event around a specific topic which they will decide (in collaboration with the instructor); it can be titled as ‘seminar’ or ‘symposium’ ¬– (max 4 persons) or to produce a creative project, such as a photo project or an essay film, around a specific topic which they will decide (in collaboration with the instructor) – max 2 persons. In both cases the output should be framed by theory and be positioned among scholarly debates. In case of organizing an event, students should decide about the overall event strategy, formulate invitations to speaker (s) and follow-up emails and work collaboratively in groups. In all cases, the topics should reflect elements from the CMS courses and teaching material and be original. The students have to work with and stick to specific deadlines and the overall students’ performance is evaluated at a collective (in case of a conference) and individual level.
