Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course is aimed at forming a holistic view of international relations in the CIS. It involves studying the stages and directions of multilateral cooperation of the states, political cooperation and cooperation in the field of collective security in the CIS. Special attention is paid to the conflict prevention and resolution in the CIS countries.
Learning Objectives
- to study the post-Soviet area as a subsystem of international relations and geopolitical region
Expected Learning Outcomes
- • to study the geopolitical post-Soviet space
- • to know the key regional and non-regional actors in the post-Soviet area and their policy towards the region
- • to know the key formats of the international cooperation in the post-Soviet space
- • to study the main reasons and historical stages of the regional conflicts (Transnistria, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, South-Eastern part of Ukraine)
- • to be able to conduct the conflict analysis as a systematic study of the profile, causes, actors, and dynamics of conflict

- Defining the Post-Soviet region
- The characteristics of the Post-Soviet space (economic and security issues)
- International organizations in the post-Soviet area. Foreign policy of the post-Soviet states
- Foreign policy of the post-Soviet states of Central Asia
- Conflicts in the Post-Soviet space
Assessment Elements
- Individual assignmentThe induvial assignment will be exercised individually and will consist of two tasks: reading the recommended literature and completing a written assignment. It is dedicated to the studying the strategy of the non-regional actors towards the states of the post-Soviet area. It must be completed by the end of the course
- Class participation
- EssayAn essay on one of the topics of the course will be offered to the students with the aim to check their knowledge in the field of the geopolitical conflicts in the post-Soviet area as well as their resolution. The essay must be 100 percent original text, without the use of artificial intelligence.
Interim Assessment
- 2023/2024 4th module0.3 * Class participation + 0.4 * Essay + 0.3 * Individual assignment
