Course Syllabus

Abstract

The main purpose of this course is to tell about the history of the states and societies of the Middle East, North Africa, Iran and Central Asia, which since the 7th century united under the banner of a common religion, Islam. Although on the one hand, the regulations of the new religion proclaimed that all its followers constitute a single community of believers - the Ummah; on the other hand, already in the 9th century, many states with their own cultural, linguistic and political features were formed on the territory of the Muslim world. During the first epoch of Muslim statehood, Arabic was its primary language but then lost its inclusive status to the Persian and Turkic languages. This diversity has opened the way for the emergence of specific institutions, practices and identities, which will be the focus of this course.
