Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course provides a brief introduction to the sociolinguistic situation of a language, describes different aspects of its grammar, from phonetics to lexicon, focusing on those features that represent typological interest, and ends with reading natural texts, both in classroom and as final control.

  • The course provides a brief introduction to the sociolinguistic situation of a language, describes different aspects of its grammar, from phonetics to lexicon, focusing on those features that represent typological interest, and ends with reading natural texts, first as home assignment and then in the classroom. This course is introductive and has no prerequisites. It giges the students a chance to improve their research skills dealing with an "exotic" language.
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • The students are able to create a list of 3-5 specific lexical phenomena of the language in focuse. They are able to identify 2-5 typologicaly interesting lexical groups of the language in focuse.
  • The students are able to interpret and to draw syntactic trees for sentences in the language in focuse.
  • The students are able to read and interpret glosses of the texts in the language in focuse. They are able to write glosses for such texts.
  • The students are able to reproduce a list of sociolinguistic features of the language in focuse.
  • The students are able to transcribe texts in the language in focuse and read the transcriptions. They are able to recognize and prononce sounds specific for the language in focuse

    Tha final grade consists of the grades for each language: Final Grade = 2/9 * Language 1 + 2/9 * Language 2 + 2/9 * Language 3 + 1/3 * Language 4 The grade for each language is the average of the assignments in that language
