Course Syllabus
Abstract
The discipline refers to the variable educational tracks offered to Bachelor’s degree students as an option while they master the optional course of English in accordance with the “Concept of the Development of English-language Communicative Competence of HSE Students”. This course is designed for the 2nd-year students who study Logistics and Supply Chain Management (Logistics&SCM) and intend to communicate effectively in English in the workplace. It allows for the personalization of the learning experience with a structured modular approach that gives flexibility to focus on specific needs and learning outcomes. Having completed the course, the students will have learned basic professional terminology and vocabulary related to commercial activities, and acquire oral and written skills in the field of business communication. Role-playing games involving conversations, business correspondence, making presentations at business meetings, as well as case studies, form and develop students' business communication skills in a meaningful and authentic professional context.
Learning Objectives
- The main goal of mastering the course is to develop and improve the professional communication skills in Logistics&SCM. To achieve this goal the following tasks are being solved: to familiarize students with the specific vocabulary used in main areas of Logistics&SCM, such as stock management, warehousing, transportation, distribution, etc.; to build the basic skills of argumentative communication in English and successful representation of intentions and results to ensure the maximum range and authenticity of business content; to master presentation agility and fluency by training in representing and discussing various topics concerning Logistics&SCM; to develop skills in business correspondence and documentation used in Logistics&SCM.
Expected Learning Outcomes

- To develop skills in creating reports and reviews on workrelated topics about complex subjects, underlining the key issues and in a style appropriate to the intended reader
- To develop skills in following extended speech and complex lines of arguments
- To develop skills in summarizing information in the professional context
- To develop skills in writing a cover letter and a CV
- To participate in extended, detailed professional discussions and meetings with confidence
- To understand specialised complex longer texts/articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems (CEFR), scanning a long text or a set of related texts in business or in the field of their specialisation in order to find general or specific information; to understanding text structure and extract key details from texts on a business/profession-related topic.

Assessment Elements
- Independent work assessmentIndependent work includes activities that students do at home, in the classroom and online work. The elements of independent work cannot be retaken.
- Oral assessmentOral assessment includes a monologue on a given topic, a presentation and further discussion, and other oral activities. The elements of oral assessment cannot be retaken.
- Written assessmentIncludes written tests: min 1 listening test, min 1 reading test, min 2 vocabulary and grammar tests, min 1 email, min 1 report
- Final assessmentPeriod of Final Assessment: the final exam is held in class within 10 days before the exam period online on MS Teams platform. The release of examination papers: during the session. The exam consists of 3 parts: Listening (30%), Reading (30%) and Writing (40%) respectively in the total mark for the exam. 0 points in case of cheating. Retaking exams: till the 15th of October 2024. Time limit: 80 minutes online/offline. Tasks complexity: В2. Exam structure: 1. Listening (L) Listen to the text and complete the tasks 1-10. max. 10 points 2. Reading (R) Read the text and complete the tasks 1-10. max. 10 points 3. Writing (W) Write a review/report. review assessment criteria/ report assessment criteria. Grading formula: L*0,3+R*0,3 +W*0,4 = 10
