Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course "Russia and the Global Energy Order” is aimed at developing a comprehensive understanding of international energy policy and diplomacy at the global, international-regional and country levels with a focus on Russia’s evolving role in the global energy architecture. The global processes under consideration include current issues of energy geopolitics, international political aspects of the problem of transition to a carbon-free economy, and the relationship between diplomacy, energy and ecology. The course studies Russia’s role in the changing global energy order through a prism of the evolving strategies of other leading energy producing and energy consuming nations in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, North America, Latin America and Europe. In this context, a particular attention is given to the international contradictions, conflicts and emerging energy alliances in the changing global energy universe.
Learning Objectives
- To understand the contemporary role of energy in shaping political, economic and military objectives of individual countries;
- To develop an understanding of the drivers of international energy relations
- The understand the main trends in modern energy policy and diplomacy
- To learn modern theoretical and methodological ideas about the role of energy policy and diplomacy
- To develop an understanding of the main concepts and theoretical approaches to the subject of international energy relations, as well as the key problems and contradictions that exist in this area
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Student analyzes the features of energy policy in modern Russia
- Student analyzes the features of Russia’s energy policy and energy policies of the member-states of the Eurasian Economic Union after the collapse of the USSR.
- Student analyzes the main trends and differences in energy policies and strategies of key energy producer and consumer nations in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, North America and Latin America.
- Student analyzes the evolving energy policies of the US, EU, Russia and China in Central Asia and the Caspian region.
- Student analyzes the role of the Arctic in the global energy architecture.
- Student analyzes the role of LNG (liquefied natural gas) in the global economy and international energy relations
- Student analyzes the role of regional and international organizations in shaping energy markets and strategies of individual countries.
- Student analyzes possible scenarios and risks for oil and gas producing countries.
