Course Syllabus
Abstract
The purpose of the course is to provide students with a theoretical foundation and practical skills for developing ideas of creation common good and solving social problems. Students will learn to implement them within the framework of volunteer projects, non-governmental organization (NGO) projects, or social enterprises. The course is project-based and is designed to serve as a mini-incubator for students who already have an idea of a social purpose startup but want to gain the skills and knowledge to implement it. Students without a specific idea but with an interest in solving social problems can join a project group and develop necessary skills for this purpose.
Learning Objectives
- Students possess the fundamental terminology related to the topics of social entrepreneurship and non-profit organizations.
- They understand the variety of differences in organizational and legal forms available for implementing socially-oriented projects in different countires (and in Russia in particular) and can choose an appropriate option for their idea.
- Students know and can apply the basic methods of Customer Development and problem research to develop a social purpose starup.
- They have an understanding of the fundamental principles of forming a project team and various ways to attract team members, including volunteer positions.
- Students become familiar with the components of resources for social projects, acquire an understanding of possible sources of funding, and can plan the resource allocation for their projects.
- They recognize the importance of partnership relationships for the successful implementation of socially-oriented projects and can build collaborative connections.
- Students understand the importance of social impact and understand how to measure it.
- They understand and can apply the basic principles in the areas of ethics, transparency, and accountability.
- Students are knowledgeable about the key principles of preparing and delivering pitches and composing grant proposals and can use them to present their projects for funding.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Students possess the fundamental terminology related to the topics of social entrepreneurship and non-profit organizations.
- Students gain an understanding of the diversity of social purpose projects and organizations as well as variety of factors influencing the implementation of such initiatives.
- Students are aware of the importance of social impact and can apply some methods of measuring social impact of a project.
- Students learn and can apply the basic methods of Customer Development, problem tree construction and Development of a social project idea.
- Students gain understanding of the basic principles of forming a project team and various ways to attract team members, including volunteer positions.
- Learn and choose options for implementing socially beneficial initiatives within the organizational and legal structures. Gain an understanding of various factors influencing the implementation of such initiatives.
- Familiarize students with the principles of collaboration with stakeholders for the successful implementation of social projects.
- Students become familiar with the components of resources for social projects, have an understanding of possible sources of funding, and can plan the resource allocation for their projects.
- Students can understand and can apply the basic principles in the areas of ethics, transparency, and accountability.
- Students learn the key principles of crafting pitches, business plans and grant proposals and can use them to present their projects for funding.
- Students the basic rules of writing business plans and grant proposals, and apply them in a paper.

Assessment Elements
- ReflectionThe Reflection is an analysis of what the team has accomplished in the initial phase of the project, which will serve as the basis for its further implementation.
- PitchProject defense in the form of a pitch
- ProjectThis written work is in the form of a business plan or a grant application
- TestThis test aims to assess the understanding of fundamental concepts covered in the course and consists of closed-ended questions with multiple-choice answers.
